The Island

Pacific Ocean

10 July, Same Time (Cook Islands Time)

The two men stood still. Eyes locked on each other. No one spoke; the only sound the soft breeze stirring through the open windows of the square.

Bishop looked at Harry, Babe, and Thor. He wore a smug grin and held his hands behind his back, his face obscured by an unshaven and long goatee. He wore black army fatigues and a pistol on his right-hand side. Bishop tilted his head and peered at Harry. “Cat got your tongue? Aren’t you going to say hello?”

Harry didn’t move. He held his P226 trained on Bishop’s head.

Bishop raised his brow and smirked. “Let me guess. You’re wondering where your little lady friend got to? And you’re racking your brain trying to figure out,” he pointed to his chest, “what the hell I am doing here.”

Harry didn’t respond straight away.

Babe and Thor pivoted their weapons from side to side, scanning the area for threats, but saw nothing.

Bishop waved his arms. “Drop your guns. You look ridiculous and you know there are muzzles trained on your skulls right now.”

Harry watched Bishop. He knew he wouldn’t be standing out in the open alone without a plan. There would be upward of eight weapons trained on them. Harry closed his eyes. “He is right.” He turned his head. “We’re surrounded. Drop them.”

A shrill laugh came from the base of the stairs. “Well done, Harry, well done. Why don’t you come down here? We’ll have a chat and work out how this is going to go, hey?” Bishop said, acting the gracious host. Peggy, Balrog, and Skull were nowhere to be seen. Harry frowned and started down the stairs.

“Where is she? And where are Balrog and Skull?” Harry asked, his gaze fixed on Bishop.

Bishop watched him; he still wore a smile that made Harry’s insides churn.

“She’s fine, see for yourself.” Bishop moved to the side, exposing a small doorway on the far side of the square.

Harry felt the feeling in his arms and legs drain away as he stood and looked across the square. On the far side, behind the fountain, was Peggy. She was on her knees with her arms bound above her head. Tears streamed down her face as she took rasping breaths. A line of blood etched out from the corner of her mouth. Beside her, an armed soldier in full battle fatigues held a pistol at her head, waiting for an order from his leader.

Bishop walked back between Harry and his line of sight to Peggy. “You’re going to do as you’re told, or she and the two useless excuses for SEALs will receive bullets through their skulls.” He pointed to the right of the fountain where Skull and Balrog sat against a wall, heads bowed. Blood streaked across their faces and dripped onto their shirts. Two soldiers, dressed identical to the soldier guarding Peggy, stood beside them, weapons in their hands. “Hell, I may even knife them. Have you ever heard a blade entering flesh? It is something to behold.
